Apple to Launch Digital U.S. Passports in Wallet App Here’s What You Need to Know

Apple is rolling out a new feature this fall that lets travelers add their U.S. passport to the Apple Wallet app on iPhones and Apple Watches. While it’s exciting news for tech-savvy travelers, there are a few important things to keep in mind.
What Is It?
With the new iOS 26 update, travelers will be able to carry a digital version of their U.S. passport right on their iPhone or Apple Watch. This can be used at some TSA checkpoints when flying within the United States.
Where You Can’t Use It
• International travel: You’ll still need to carry your physical passport at all border crossings and customs.
• Not accepted everywhere: Only select U.S. airports and TSA checkpoints will support the digital passport at launch.
Who Can Use It?
• iPhone 8 or later with iOS 26
• Apple Watch Series 4 or later
• U.S. passport holders only
Is It Safe?
Yes. The digital passport is encrypted and stored securely on your device. You’ll need Face ID or Touch ID to use it, and you have to approve every time it’s shared with TSA.
How to Add It
1. Update to iOS 26 (available this fall)
2. Open the Wallet app
3. Tap + and choose “U.S. Passport”
4. Follow the steps to verify your identity
Apple’s digital passport makes domestic travel a little easier but it’s not a replacement for your physical passport, especially if you’re flying internationally. Be sure to check whether your airport supports it before you leave home.
