From Tofino to St. John’s: A Cross-Country Canadian Bucket List

From Tofino to St. John’s: Why More Canadians Are Exploring Their Own Backyard This Summer

A recent Deloitte Canada survey revealed that 74% of Canadians plan to vacation within the country this summer and the reasons are compelling. From rugged coastlines in Tofino to the historic charm of St. John’s, Canada offers world-class travel experiences with rich cultural immersion, jaw-dropping landscapes, and now, new incentives aimed at making domestic travel more accessible.

Why Flying Within Canada Is So Expensive

A major roadblock for many travelers, however, remains the high cost of domestic flights. According to the Montreal Economic Institute, nearly one-third of the cost of a Canadian plane ticket is made up of taxes and fees a sharp contrast to air travel in the U.S. Here are a few examples:
    •    Airport Improvement Fees: $35 at Toronto Pearson vs. $6.16 in most U.S. airports
    •    Security Charges: $9.94 for domestic flights; $34.42 for international
    •    Fuel Taxes: 4 cents/litre in Canada vs. just 1.55 cents/litre in the U.S.

As The Weekly Voice reports, these additional costs are prompting some Canadians to reconsider flying altogether. But instead of heading across the border for cheaper fares, a growing number are embracing a “buy local” mindset choosing to explore homegrown destinations instead.

Introducing the “Canada Strong Pass”

To counter the high travel costs and spark local tourism, the federal government has launched the Canada Strong Pass, as reported by blogTO.

This new initiative offers:
    •    Discounted VIA Rail and domestic airfare
    •    Free or reduced entry to national parks and historic sites
    •    Affordable pricing for individuals, families, and seniors

Travel expert Anisha Chaturvedi described the pass as “the government’s way of encouraging Canadians to see their own country first.” So far, it seems to be working sales of the pass have already exceeded expectations.

A Movement Rooted in Pride

“At a time when our economy is under attack from President Trump, Canadians are stepping up helping our neighbours, buying local, and celebrating our beautiful country,” stated Liberal leader Mark Carney.

From coast to coast, Canadians are rediscovering the beauty and diversity of their homeland and making the most of every kilometer.
